Easy Camping Style at the Euroka campgrounds in Glenbrook, Blue Mountains
Looking to experience camping for the first time, or with young families? Euroka campground is a great starting point and the perfect weekender in the lower Blue Mountains National Park – not too far from Sydney, with day hikes nearby too.
Driving a hatchback front-wheel-drive / two-wheel-drive car, I did wonder if I could get to this location ok, and fortunately you can. That said, there is a short river crossing en-route (less than 30s to drive across) which is a flat, concreted path that gets covered when the river is flowing, and whilst we made it across, during heavy downpours, I’d probably advise otherwise if you have a hatchback, or a lowered car.
For most of the drive to the grounds, it’s sealed roads throughout, however the last few hundred metres, turns into compacted dirt which my car was fine to handle.
There are 5 camping areas within Euroka: Appletree Flat, Bennett Ridge, Darug, Nioka and Redgum. Each with their own benefits. As soon as you arrive to the campgrounds, you can either turn left or right – left takes you to Darug campground, and right takes you to the other locations.
Euroka campground locations | Maximum tents in each location | Maximum capacity |
---|---|---|
Darug (tent only) | 4 | 24 people total |
Nioka (tent only) | 2 | 12 people total |
Redgum (tent only) | 4 | 24 people total |
Appletree Flat (tent only) | 4 | 24 people total |
Bennett Ridge (tent only) | 4 | 24 people total |
We stayed in Redgum, which I actually quite enjoyed and is one of the first campgrounds upon arrival, after turning right. That said, both Nioka & Redgum campgrounds adjoin each other, and are partially sloped in sections. If I was to choose between the two, Redgum has a more comfortable flat ground, in addition to being up on a rise. And whilst they adjoin each other, they are still quite separate, so if there’s a large group of you travelling together, I’d try to book out one of the entire campgrounds if you can.
The car park for Redgum is an easy walk-in to your tent location, and very accessible to setup up your gear with repeat boot to site access. There are long-drop toilet facilities (no showers) in this camping location, so make sure you bring some hand-sanitiser, drinking water, cooking water etc.
Mobile phone reception is also choppy, so be prepared to be without devices for the weekend. I was on Vodafone, whilst my husband was on Telstra – and Telstra took a bit of walking around to get reception every now and then. Vodafone had no reception at all.
All sites at Euroka campground are unmarked and unpowered. But there are shared wood barbecues and fire rings – you just need to check if there are any fire bans in place before bringing firewood for your stay. Fortunately for us, there weren’t, so we had great nights with roaring fires keeping us warm of an evening. There are scattered shared picnic tables available as well.
That said, when we were leaving, I did want to see the other campgrounds in Euroka, as this was my first visit to the area. Appletree Flat was the next campground further along to the right, and in a hatchback front-wheel-drive / two-wheel-drive car it was still accessible. It’s much more open and central, and as the name states, it looked to have flat campgrounds throughout. Just to note, the road to access this campground has a section which could get soft and muddy from heavy rain, but doable if you drive slowly.
I didn’t make it to the last campground Bennett Ridge, as it looped back around after Appletree Flat. It looked too wet to continue, that I was worried my car would get stuck. It actually rained two days before our camping stay, hence the elevated river crossing when we first arrived.
Overall, great location for friends and families to stay over a weekend. The local hikes nearby include Jellybean Track, Red Hands Cave walking track, and Blue Pool walking track.
Tips:
- You must pre-book your campground location before arrival
- Park gates are locked of an evening, so make sure you arrive at a reasonable time. Some of the roads are windy as you approach the campgrounds, so do take care coming in and out.
- Mobile phone reception is limited – you’re in a valley – so plan your stay with a view of little to no reception at the campsite
- As this is a national park, park fees apply, and is additional to your booking. You can purchase an annual pass for use across all NSW national parks, or check your online camping or accommodation booking confirmation to purchase your single entry day pass
